Fundamentals of Acquisitions 2006 Summer/Fall Schedule

There is still space available in the July session of the popular Fundamentals of Acquisitions Web course. Registration ends June 16.

Fundamentals of Acquisitions focuses on what you need to know about the basics of acquiring monographs and serials: goals and methods; financial management of materials budgets; and relationships among acquisitions librarians, library booksellers, subscription agents, and publishers.

Participants will receive a broad overview of the operations involved in acquiring materials after the selection decision is made. The five basic components of this course are goals of acquisitions services; methods and basic functions of acquisitions; vendors; ethics; and budget/finance and accounting.

This Web-based course is tailored for librarians and paraprofessionals new to the acquisitions field. As it is a fundamentals course, topics are introductory in nature. Class segments are geared to cover issues of interest to staff in all types of libraries.

Course Format:
Using a WebCT developed site, the course is composed of self-paced modules with facilitated interaction led by two instructors. There are predetermined start and end dates and a suggested pace which includes interaction with the instructors and classmates.

6th Annual Brick & Click Library Symposium

The 6th Annual Brick & Click Library Symposium, integrating issues of service for both in-house and remote library customers, will be held November 3, 2006, at Northwest Missouri State University, Maryville. Information on the symposium and its programs is available at http://brickandclick.org/. Programs range from using podcasts in distributed learning and using TabletPCs in instruction to electronic resource pricing issues, managing online government documents, and copyright issues.

Registration for the event is $125.

The Brick & Click Symposium qualifies as a Category A continuing education event.

Illinois Library Association Annual Conference, Oct. 3-6 @ Navy Pier

The Illinois Library Association has posted the "Preliminary Program" for its 2006 Annual Conference. The program and other details may be found at http://www.ila.org/events/conference.htm.

The basic "early-bird" registration price is $125 for ILA members; single day registration at the early-bird rate is $75.

Included in the schedule of events is the IACRL Luncheon/Annual Business Meeting. Registration for this event is $50.

ACRL 2007 Update: Estimated Rates Posted

The 2007 ACRL Conference, "Sailing into the Future -- Charting Our Destiny", will be held in Baltimore, March 29 - April 1, 2007. The conference web site, at http://www.acrl.org/ala/acrl/acrlevents/baltimore/baltimore.htm, presently includes a request for program proposals.

Exact registration costs have not yet been posted, but rates for the 2005 conference have been posted for planning purposes. ACRL indicates that the rates for 2007 will be similar to 2005. Registration for the conference will begin in Fall 2006, with the "early-bird" deadline falling in February 2007.

The ACRL conference is one of the four "special" conferences for LIBRAS Continuing Education support. This category of conferences--which includes ALA (in Chicago), IACRL, and LOEX, allows support for registration costs only.

LITA National Forum 2006: Netville in Nashville, Oct. 26-29, 2006

ACRL's Institute for Information Literacy (IIIL) invites you to apply for Immersion '06, which will be held at Simmons College in Boston, July 28 - August 2, 2006. Immersion '06 will be four-and-one-half days of intensive training and education for academic librarians. Immersion '06 will provide you with the intellectual tools and practical techniques to help you build or enhance your instruction programs. A faculty of nationally recognized librarians will offer the program. Program sessions fall into two separate tracks:

TEACHER TRACK. This track focuses on individual development for those who are interested in enhancing, refreshing, or extending their individual instruction skills. Curriculum includes classroom techniques, learning theory, leadership, and assessment framed in the context of information literacy. Participants selected for the Teacher Track will prepare a description of an instructional situation and a related presentation in advance of the Immersion program. During Immersion, participants will revise the presentation based on feedback from colleagues and faculty.

PROGRAM TRACK. This track focuses on developing, integrating, and managing institutional and programmatic information literacy programs. Participants selected for the Program Track will develop individual case studies in advance of the Immersion program. Change dynamics, systems thinking, institutional outcomes assessment, scalability, and the integration of teaching, learning, and technology will be brought to bear on analyzing the various programmatic challenges presented in the case studies. Immersion participants will be expected to develop the case studies into an action plan for implementation at the home institution.

Acceptance to the Immersion Program is competitive; participation is limited to 90 individuals to ensure an environment that fosters group interaction and active participation. The application deadline is Friday, December 2, 2005.

It is my pleasure to announce the recipients of this year's LIBRAS Professional Development Grants and the LIBRAS Research Grant.
